Prominent Genome Projects: Pan troglodytes

The chimpanzee genome project began in January 2003 and a draft sequence was published in December 2003. The project was funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and was done at the Broad Institute and at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis (WUSTL) . The genome was sequenced using whole-genome shotgun technique.
It is estimated that humans and chimpanzees have roughly 98% of their DNA in common.
